Rules and recommendation for building boulders on our walls.

Everyone is allowed to build new routes and are encouraged to do so! This page describes some rules to follow to make sure the walls look orderly and prevent chaos and confusion.

If you are interested in more tips and guidelines for building new routes, you can join the "become a better boulder builder" day that the club hosts once a semester. During these boulder builder days, we spend the day building, testing and learning about how to build interesting bouldering routes.

Rules for building boulders:

Problems need to use the same color holds.

• Try to stick to the same series of holds, or at the very least the same shade of color.
• Avoid building new routes with colors that are already on the wall you want to build on.

All routes need to be marked with a colored washer.

• The washer color indicates the difficulty of the route.
• If there are two start holds: Each hold must be marked with one colored washer.
• If there is one start hold: The start hold must be marked with two colored washers.
• For the final hold, only one washer is needed.

Problems that will be removed:

Elimination problems:

• Taking an existing problem and eliminating holds.

  • Elimination of holds is part of challenging yourself, and it is highly recommended, but leaving gaps in existing problems could cause a problem for others attempting the climb

Routes that use existing routes as a base for the new route.

• If you add something to the end and/or start of an already existing problem.

Routes built from scratch with different colored holds throughout.

• We might just change the holds out with different holds to stick to the same color, typing to keep the beta and spirit of the problem.      

Dangerous routes.

• Climbing at DTU climbing is on your own risk. However, we do not want to encourage people getting hurt, by making high risk boulders.
• This includes boulders jumping to and from the windowsill

Any routes built the day of a section or wall cleaning without talking with the board.

• Section cleaning is preceded by a BBBB (become a better boulder builder) or a hired setter. Both events need clean walls to get the most out of the day/setter.

Problems that will be changed: 

All changes will be carried out with as little disruption to your problems as possible.

Holds can be changes/moved if they are in the way of already existing problems.

• The problems that are on the wall first have priority. If you cannot get your problem to fit properly, wait for the next time that there is section cleaning.

If the backside of the hold is visible/sticking out from the wall they are located on.

• The back side of the holds are often sharp, and people can be caught or hurt on the sharp edges.

Using the wrong color or series to build a route

• This is done to make the routes consistent and easier to identify on the wall.
